5 Things You Can Do With Your Child to Increase Language Development

5 Things You Can Do With Your Child to increase language development from 0-3 years of age when your child is absorbing his/her environment in the “unconscious mind” phase of development.

  • 1. Use proper and correct language when speaking with your child during this receptive stage of language acquisition (limit baby talk).
  • 2. Take your child out to social gatherings and expose your child to as much as possible.
  • 3. If one parent speaks a different language in the home have this parent always speak to the child in that language.  It is a myth that another language will interfere with English.  Many other countries in the world people speak at least two languages and often three languages.
  • 4. Talk to your child and read books from an early age and be aware that your child is absorbing your culture/surroundings.
  • 5. Take time to observe your child as this will be an important skill in future teaching and understanding of your child-record your observations.

From 0 to 6 is the most important part of life, and this applies to character developmental also (Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, p.177).
